Gain extensive knowledge and experience from Kharkiv’s renowned Dancer, Choreographer and Artistic Director, Ms. Karina Ostrovska.

Currently residing in Berlin, Germany, Ms. Ostrovska will bring her expertise to Canada for only a short time. We are humbled to host one of her few stops on tour, and to offer the Calgary and surrounding community this unique opportunity.

About the Workshop

  • Saturday Sept 30.  - Workshop to include seminar and dance

           6 hours(1 hr lunch). 10:00am - 4:00pm $40.00/person

About Karina

From 1991 to 1996, Karina studied at the Kharkiv State Institute of Culture (now the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture), after which she received a diploma with honours. After graduation, Karina was invited to teach leading courses at the Department of Folk Choreography "Ukrainian Folk Dance and Methods of Teaching", "Choreographic Ensemble", "Samples of Folk Choreography".

Since 2010 Karina has been head of the department, folk choreography at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. In 2011 she received the academic title of "Associate Professor".

For 26 years of hard work Karina  became known as one of the best, as a specialist in Ukrainian folk and stage dance. The development of Ukrainian folk and stage dance through competent teaching in elite educational institutions of Kharkiv region are also connected with Karina.

Karina made a significant contribution to the development of the folk dance theatre "Zapovit". She had worked as a leading soloist for 20 years, and for the last 15 years she has been a choreographer and assistant to the theatre's chief choreographer in creating concert programs. Since 2022 she has been one of the artistic directors of the theatre.

With the participation of Karina, all creative reports of Kharkiv region were held in Kyiv, the Zapovit folk dance theatre won international competitions and dance festivals in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Poland, France, Belgium, Hungary, Macedonia, Italy, Spain and Portugal. She also participated in the

creation of programs with  "Zapovit", which won first place numerous times,  including the All-Ukrainian competitions of folk choreography named after P. Virsky (2011), and  became the winner of the I All-Ukrainian competition of folk choreography named after Hero of Ukraine M. Vantukh (Lviv, November 2008)

Her master classes in Ukrainian and classical dances in Ukraine (Kharkiv, Kropyvnytskyi, Kerch, Sumy, Zaporizhia, Dnipro, Poltava), Lithuania (Shirvintos), the Czech Republic (Prague), Italy (Florence, Rome) are essential for the development and popularization of our national culture.

In 2011, for the first time in Slobozhanshchyna, a professional group was created in Kharkiv - the Great Academic Slobozhansky Song and Dance Ensemble and Since 2012, Karina holds the position of chief choreographer of this ensemble.

Karina is personally the winner of international art competitions and festivals that took place in Ukraine (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kerch), Portugal (Barasheya, Sernache de Bonjardim), Spain (Holline), Georgia (Batumi). 

For her fruitful multifaceted activity, Karina has a number of significant honours and awards including, the highest award of choreographic art of Ukraine the "Medal of Pavlo Virsky". As well, In 2009, Karina was awarded the Honorary State Title "Honoured Worker of Culture in Ukraine"
